Asian virtues at work in Europe |
As a person constantly seeking variety and new challenges in life, I have always enjoyed consulting work. And when McKinsey's Asia House appeared, I found just the right blend for me: the concept of connecting two continents clicked with me immediately.
So off I went for a new adventure in a different geography. What I soon found out was, in Europe, where the consulting market is well-established, clients attach more importance to the real value that each consultant would bring to the table. Being a non-European even gives me a more objective perspective on pan-European topics, hence enabling me to exert more rigor in forming analyses and recommendations. And this is what my clients appreciate most.
Building relationships with European clients was another novel experience. This, however, wouldn't detract from my efforts of being a good listener, which is in fact an Asian virtue, and understanding the client's issues with a more comprehensive view. As a result, clients at various levels feel they are "heard," and would have higher commitment to the final recommendations.

The rewarding client experience |

The results have been very encouraging. Take, for example, my recent project for an apparel retailer. We assessed the harmonization potential for assortment Europe-wide. While immediate financial impact was small, the client was convinced of its long-term intangible benefits. After working together for nearly seven months, the clients treated our team as if we were their own colleagues, inviting us to their annual Christmas party and New Year's lunch.
