A world outside of research |

Before I finished my PhD in electrical engineering, I had been working in the world of scientific research for more than five years and thought I would always be a research engineer. However, things started to change after I was invited to a PhD recruiting event held by McKinsey.
I was drawn to the inspiring case studies and enjoyed the intellectual work in the problem-solving process. In the same way pursuing theoretical research is analogous to a marathon, undertaking a project lasting for several months is just like a short sprint and is more challenging and exciting. Moreover, it is much more effective to see personal impact in the fast-moving business. So when I got an offer, I jumped at the chance. And I made the right choice: working at McKinsey has opened hundreds of new doors for me in a wide array of functions and industries.

The Asia House presents a unique value proposition within McKinsey in that it links Europe and Asia together. One of the most rewarding projects I worked on was helping a European niche manufacturer improve its global business. After an initial diagnosis, we identified that China as a key market that would offer them significant potential. Although our client admitted that they had considered this before, they were hesitant to increase their investment since they felt China was too far away from Europe and was a market they couldn't fully understand.
After weeks of rigorous analysis on market attractiveness and accessibility, we presented our results to show them how much potential can be further captured in China. It was right after the meeting that the client gained confidence and decided to expand their China business. It is really amazing for me to find out how we can help our client tackle such cross-continental challenges. |
