Sönke Bästlein, Torsten Blaeser, Stefan Rehbach, Frauke Weyrather: "War for Talent in Fernost", personalmagazin, September 2006. China's economy has greatly increased in importance for multinational companies (MNCs) over the last few years. But their high demand for suitable highly skilled talent meets a very limited supply. This article presents the key characteristics of the Chinese labor market and attempts to define special steps that MNCs can take to successfully recruit, manage, and retain talent in China.
McKinsey Quarterly "Serving the new Chinese customer" (2006, special edition). China's consumers won't become more and more like their Western counterparts, as some might expect. Similarities will surface as shoppers gain experience, but our research suggests that Chinese customers will continue to embrace the traditional values of family and community.

McKinsey Quarterly "Fulfilling India's promise" (2005, special edition). There's much talk in India about skilled workers and the knowledge economy. Yet there is still much to be done in getting the basics right. India needs more jobs in sectors such as manufacturing, construction, and agribusiness, where it isn't necessary to be a knowledge worker to make a living. Only then can the country fulfill its promise.
Gordon Orr: "How Private Equity Firms Can Play in China," The McKinsey Quarterly, Web exclusive, February 2005. Competition to invest in new opportunities in China is making capital abundant and thus reducing the influence of individual foreign investors. For this reason, as well as a general lack of experience with China's business culture, private equity managers may have difficulty pulling off successful deals in that country for some time, though the economic boom there presents them with opportunities to invest in non-Chinese companies that will benefit from it.
McKinsey Quarterly "China today" (2004, special edition). This special edition of The McKinsey Quarterly seeks to show senior executives how to capture the opportunities in China. In articles that cross functional and sector lines, the authors discuss ways of overcoming the country's cultural, regulatory, logistical, operational, and organizational obstacles.
McK Wissen 10 "China" (Sep 2004, in German). The dragon is stirring. The western economic world is alarmed, and yet, somehow, fascinated. China is taking over one market leadership after the other, has long since become the most important trading partner for German companies in Asia. But what do Germans know about this partner? Our German language magazine, McK Wissen, will shed some light on a few contradictions and give some economic insight into modern China.

Günter Rommel: "Zukunftsmodell Deutschland. Was wir von Amerika und Japan lernen können" (Future model for Germany: what we can learn from America and Japan) (2005). Using the example of the living standards of a typical family, Günter Rommel paints a plastic picture of German living conditions in comparison to Japan and the United States. His comprehensive, empirical data shows why the German societal system is moving towards a state of imbalance and how Europeans can learn from their Japanese counterparts.
Tab Bowers, Greg Gibb, Jeffrey Wong: "Banking in Asia: Acquiring a Profit Mindset" (2003). This book points out six emerging trends beneath the chaotic surface of Asia's retail banking sector that are the seeds of growth. But uncertainty is high and leaders will need to plot a careful course to reap the benefits. More on McKinsey.com.
Jonathan Woetzel, "Capitalist China - Strategies for a Revolutionized Economy" (2003). Jonathan Woetzel explains China's economic reforms and the resulting business opportunities, sector by sector. Drawing on 18 years of experience and in-depth interviews with corporate leaders who have thrived in China, he details the strategies businesses need to follow to succeed in this growing market. More on McKinsey.com.
Marvin Bower: "The Will to Lead" (1997, now available in Chinese). Marvin Bower, one of McKinsey's founders, reflects on the importance of leadership in working relationships and teamwork.
